Saturday morning from the rough.

Saturday morning.
Coffee in hand. House quiet… like too quiet.
Jan’s in Iowa.
And if you know me—even a little—you know that historically that sentence has ended with,
“…and things got a little outta hand.”
There was a version of me—not even that long ago—that would’ve treated this weekend like a hall pass from Jesus himself.
“Oh, wife’s outta town?
Better go find some trouble.
Or let trouble find me.
Hell, meet it halfway and buy it a drink.”
That guy?
He would’ve been out last night.
Probably somewhere dimly lit with overpriced bourbon, making friends he wouldn’t remember and decisions he definitely would.
But not last night.
Last night I stayed home.
Fired up the grill like a grown man who owns his life instead of renting chaos from it.
Threw some steaks on.
Had a couple buddies over.
Laughed. Talked a little shit. Ate like kings without needing to act like idiots.
Nobody got arrested.
Nobody got their feelings hurt.
Nobody texted anything they had to apologize for this morning.
Which, for me, is what we call progress.
And here’s the funny part…
I woke up this morning with a hangover anyway.
Not because I went wild.
No sir.
Just because apparently I’m 54 and my body now treats two drinks like I went on a three-day bender in 1997.
Back then I could drink all night, wake up, go to work, coach Little League, and build a damn deck before dinner.
Now?
I look at a bourbon wrong and my head’s like,
“Hey man… we’re shutting it down today.”
But even with that…
This morning feels different.
No regret sitting on my chest.
No replaying the night trying to figure out if I crossed a line.
No checking my phone like it’s a crime scene.
Just coffee.
A quiet house.
And a man standing in the middle of it who didn’t burn anything down just because he had the chance.
And listen… I ain’t gonna pretend I didn’t feel that little itch.
That voice still shows up sometimes.
The one that says,
“C’mon… go see what kind of trouble you can find.”
But last night I didn’t listen to it.
I let it sit there.
And I stayed right where my feet were planted.
And that right there?
That’s growth.
Not sexy.
Not loud.
No big speech attached to it.
Just a man in his own kitchen…
with a steak on the grill…
friends around him…
and nothing to prove to anybody anymore.
Jan’s in Iowa.
And I didn’t lose my damn mind.
That might not mean much to the world…
But it means a hell of a lot to me.
