Saturday Morning From the Rough
Well…we made it to Saturday.
Coffee’s hot. Knee’s making noises that sound expensive. Soul’s a little tired but still standing.
Good week. Emotional week. One of those weeks.
Last Saturday I got to chase a little white ball around with fellow Dad Bod legend Corey, and brother, that was good for the soul. Few things in life beat golf with somebody who understands the sacred balance of competitive trash talk, questionable swing mechanics, and pretending that double bogey “really wasn’t that bad considering the lie.”
Then this week…
I finished the book.
And I ain’t gonna lie to you…that took something outta me.
Turns out writing thousands of words about your life, your mistakes, your scars, your victories, your failures, and every ghost that ever rode shotgun with you…ain’t exactly light cardio.
It’s weird. You spend months, years even, climbing a mountain and then one day you stand on top holding the thing in your hands and instead of fireworks and bald eagles playing the national anthem…you mostly just sit there blinking like…
Well hell.
I actually did it.
I’m okay.
Just…feeling it.
Proud. Tired. Relieved. A little lost without the daily grind of wrestling chapters into submission. Little emotional if I’m being honest. But okay.
Really okay.
Last night Jan and I had date night, which frankly might be the best medicine God ever invented outside of bourbon, bacon, and a flushed 7 iron.
Good food. Good conversation. Good reminder that after all the chaos life throws at you…sometimes the win is just sitting across from the person you love and realizing you still genuinely like each other.
That matters more than younger me ever understood.
And now?
Now it’s Saturday morning.
And I get to hit the golf course again today.
Will my driver cooperate?
Absolutely not.
Will my short game suddenly remember it was raised right?
Unlikely.
Will I stand over a 4 foot putt with the confidence of a man who has missed this exact putt 47 times in his adult life?
You’re damn right I will.
Because that’s golf.
And maybe that’s life too.
You keep showing up.
You keep swinging.
You keep laughing at the bad shots.
You celebrate the good ones.
And every now and then…if you’re lucky…you look around and realize you’re standing in a life you once wasn’t sure you’d survive long enough to have.
Alright boys.
Time for coffee number two, questionable optimism, and another round from the rough.
Let’s go see what kind of trouble Saturday’s got planned.
